Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike house concert on June 18th: please go to the following link and read that section first, then email Mike to save a seat. Thanks! :-) http://canaaninstitute.org/mikesmusic/viewtopic.php?p=2607#2607
Directions to Mike and
Raylene's home - this is a private residence ...
RSVPs
are not generally required for everyday ordinary events,
but they are
VERY
useful
to us - especially if you are new to one of our groups or
attending a house concert - email is great for that!
:-) michael@canaaninstitute.org
For the Hammond Hill
events at Mike and Raylene's (bike
rides, skis, hikes,
trail runs,
trail workshops, folk music jams, concerts and
workshops) this group usually meets at the workshop building
(northernmost) at our residence on Canaan
Rd . If you are visiting Hammond Hill State Forest on
another
day go here for instructions: Hammond
Hill
Trails Map
Our
mailing address is: 223
Canaan Rd,
Brooktondale, NY 14817 and our phone
number at home is 607-539-6153.
Cell phone
reception is very poor. Please
allow 30 minutes drive time from Ithaca! More if there is construction
or bad weather. Exercise and trail work events
(bikes, skis, runs)
leave promptly within 10 minutes (or less) after the announced time.
Here
is a crude hand
drawn road
map to Canaan Rd. from Ithaca side (not to scale).
No cell
phone voice coverage at our house - sometimes texting works. So it's ok
to leave our number with babysitter etc ...
CAT ALLERGIES:
We have one or two cats who hang out in the workshop for part of their
day. We generally just put the cats outdoors if they are bothering you.
If you are extremely allergic: we advise please do not come to this
venue, sorry! We also have dogs and chickens on the property. :-)
WebMapping: GoogleMap MapQuest - CAUTION!!
- Do not let these mapping programs choose the route for you.
This is a rural area and we have seasonal use dirt roads
that
are not suitable for travel with a passenger car.
Specifically:
Canaan Road to the north of us, also Star Stanton Rd and Hammond Hill
Roads
all have sections that go through the state forest, are not plowed in
the winter and vary from difficult to impossible even in the summer.
The
written directions below go around the state forest and avoid these
roads! Also note: Our property is about 1/4 mile further north than
indicated on the Google Map image.:-)
PARKING -
It is pretty much single file on the side of the street. East side
facing north. In the
winter time please park on one side only (facing north works the best)
so the snow plow can get past: less critical in the summer. If you have
trouble getting around out of the car and need to park close, let us
know ahead of time, we can figure something out! We recently purchased
the property across the street in May 2009. We may
be able to eventually use that for extra parking and you can use it NOW
for TURNING AROUND :-)

March
and Early April: Spring
Mud
Alert
-- This
is a rural property and is not all paved with nice little walkways
(sorry.. it's on the list!) Just so you are not surprised by this.. it
is mostly a problem in the early spring (March and April) when the
ground is mostly frozen and the surface of the lawn begins to thaw and
the snow to melt .. it smells wonderfully like spring, but can ruin a
nice pair of shoes. So don't wear your best shoes,
maybe even
wear slip on boots and bring slippers or mocs or something to change
into to
jam in comfortably. Please
take your shoes off
before you go into the house.
Shoes/boots in shop are ok but try not to track mud onto the "jam
rug" in the center of the shop. Thanks!
From
our neighbor up
the street 10/14/2005: "It's
not a
huge problem, because I
fixed
it, and I really don't want to make a huge issue of it...but someone
KO'd my mailbox Wednesday night
(10/12). In fact, it could have been hoodlums on the
loose! But, just in case, would you mind asking folks to be
careful turning around in my drive? See
you, and thanks" -Una --- Her driveway is north of ours on
the
left. This happened on a music jam night!! Please be careful, or fess
up, and I'll go fix it. -Mike :-)
RSVPs
are not
required, but very useful to me if you
have
time - email is fine... michael@canaaninstitute.org
