this as a beginner fiddle player who was excited to
share everything
I learned about folk music with my friends. (more at MySpace.com

a look!) To keep myself and
the rest
of my musician friends organized I started a music email list and this
web page. It has really evolved into more than that. It is a valuable
networking resource for the musicians: both beginner and expert,
amateur and professional. It really only
works if you use the
information and stay on the list. It also works better if you help:
send me your gigs and other interesting music information and I'll get
the word out to the rest of the list. For clarification:
I maintain 3 email lists; one each
for
Customers of Ludgate
Farms,
another for mostly Folk Music [ Mikes-Music ] and a third for outdoor
exercise (Cycle and XC-Ski)... if
you want to be on any or

[ VENUE WEBSITE ][ EVENT POSTER ][ FACEBOOK EVENT ] Sat Aug 21 -- This date has been reserved for a private party (a wedding with a contra dance). Tentative. NEWS! O'Shanigans has been invited to perform at the Ontario Center for Performing Arts - in Oswego NY for a contra dance in the fall of 2010. We are settling on a date now!The O'Shanigans perform Celtic and World Fiddle tunes suitable for general entertainment and contra dances. They currently combine skills of two of Ithaca's most experienced open music jam leaders with an incredibly talented young fiddler native to the Finger Lakes region. The O’Shanigans is: Phil Robinson on guitar (Ithaca Bluegrass jam leader, multi-instrumentalist, accomplished guitarist ...), Tim Ball on fiddle (Contrapasso, Tunescape, IC violinist ... ) and Michael Ludgate on mandolin (Canaan jam leader, Waltz jam originator, Cornell Middle Eastern Ensemble ... ). O'Shanigans was originally started by Phil to satisfy a fun Saint Patrick's Day gig. The musical members shift and change a bit as time passes, but Phil and or Mike are usually at the core. Yes you guessed it; the name was coined as a spin off on the word shenanigans and that first Irish gig! They have not lost their sense of humor even when they hit a few bumps in the road!More about O'Shanigans on their website http://www.canaaninstitute. I explain this now and then, but not every time. YFN is an
abbreviation for "Your Friends and Neighbors", an open acoustic folk band (open meaning it is a pick up band of whoever shows up). We play every Monday night on the Ithaca commons all summer long for contra dancers and for various other - usually public events like fundraisers and festivals.... Monday nights in the summer we usually play with no set list for the evening. We work from a rough list of about 200 tunes. Sheet music is available on this website: see "sheet music". For more structured events, like a Friday dance or a major festival, we try to come up with a plan, a set list: a smaller list of tunes to focus on. Remember: Just becase it is an open band (and it IS very friendly and open) does not mean it cannot have some structure like a set list or plan for the evening! :-) there is more info at these links: How did YFN get it's name? See this link: http://canaaninstitute.org/mikesmusic/viewtopic.php?p=1971#1971 More: http://tedcrane.com/DanceDB/ http://canaaninstitute.org/ http://www.ludgatefarms.com/mus_sound.html The new CD is now on sale at Ludgate's Farm Market on Hanshaw Road! Flies’ new
album, Until the Ocean, is their first

their
beloved bass player of 17

it was mixed by Canadian, Kevin Doyle (Sinead

my long-time musical pal, John Hoffmann, and it features our two bands,
The Haywire Gang and UpSouth,. as well as many duets by me and John.
Thanks for your interest and support -Mac Benford"It's About Time features John Hoffmann and Mac Benford, two powerful musicians in their first recording together. On 22 tracks, John and Mac demonstrate their versatility, with fiddle-banjo duets, banjo-guitar duets, twin banjo tunes, ballads and hot old-time fiddle tunes. Joining Mac and John on three tracks is Randi Beckmann. This trio forms the hot dance band UpSouth. Another trio configuration featured on this album is The Haywire Gang, which includes John, Mac and Paula Bradley (guitar, banjo uke & vocals). The Haywire Gang is featured on nine tracks. and were delighted and shocked to find they couldn’t tell
their
voices
apart. Now as “Glass of Water,” they sing
a wide
range of
traditional and traditionally-based tunes, including ballads from
Appalachia and the British Isles, shape note hymns, and anything they
can arrange for tight treble harmonies. "They have a
remarkable
knack for creating distinctive arrangements and weaving intricate vocal
lines. Their blithe singing shows a deep affection and respect for
their eclectic sources.""All the Other Fine Things includes some of our favorite traditionals that we've been singing for years, and some newer arrangements of songs by contemporary composers and singer-songwriters. From the chilling harmonies of "The Summer Day" to the spunky lyrics of "Who's Gonna Shoe", we think you'll really enjoy this mix! The entire album is the two of us singing acapella, with a few surprises thanks to Will Russell at Electric Wilburland." http://www.glassofwatermusic.com/ Another New local CD Now Available at Ludgate Farms! In the case of the resurgence of interest in the old time string band music of the Appalachians that took place in the '70s, it would be unfair to say that even the most serious and academic of the folklorists and collectors weren't also having a good time playing the music, but when it came to making sure everyone was having a good time, there was nothing quite like seeing the Highwoods String Band. As banjo player Mac Benford liked to say, it was, "all about FUN - fun for us and fun for our audiences."” [ the remainder of the article is really interesting! http://www.spun.com/music/artist-biography.jsp?id=831004 ] Another article here http://www.funkyside.com/macbenford/ Selin and Harris

… With the completion of the Erie Canal in
the 1820s and an influx of new East coast urban influences across New
York
State, the old contra dances gradually gave way to a fad for the
somewhat newer
square dances (the cotillions or quadrilles) along with a succession of
couple
or "round" dances (e.g. waltzes, polkas, schottisches, and by the
early 20th century, two steps and fox-trots). Locally, rural dancers
tended to
hang on to only a few of the contra standards, preferring instead the
variability and spontaneity of sets of squares along with a handful of
popular
round dances. Favorite contra dances in one region or another of New
York
included "Opera Reel," "Money Musk," "French
Four," "Crooked-S," "Lady Washington," "Portland
Fancy," and "The Virginia Reel." The Opera Reel was particularly
popular in some regions, as the Hod Case diaries note from an 1879

Here's
is my little rant
on commenting about how expensive
it is ... just some thoughts ...
first .. if you have ever tried to run any kind of business or even a non-profit (non profits aren't legally allowed to loose money) the cost of everything just keeps going up: gas, oil, labor, carpets, polyurethane for the dance floors and so on. second .. the musicians do deserve at least travel expenses for their efforts (I know we all love to play and will do it for free, because it is so much dang fun, but we have to put gas in that thing that got us there too!) another .. it's often not really just a suggestion or a donation at all. The organizer of the particular event may likely be avoiding conflicts with the 'authorities' such as a zoning ordinance that does not allow a "dance hall" but will allow non-profit "social gatherings"... or a bar owner who doesn't want to scare off his 'regulars' ... so they might say 'donation' but you are expected to pay your way ... -:) so .. just shell out the (usually very reasonable) fee and help support good clean, honest fun and folk music! -:) Music Forum http://canaaninstitute.org/mikesmusic/ CARPOOLS, FESTIVALS, CLASSIFIEDS!
