Some
local music trivia and a Centennial ...
The Ithaca Journal is
covering the 100 year anniversary of the Ithaca High School Orchestra.
They have put together a nice web area to honor the event -- [
article here ] and in today's (May 25)
paper.
My maternal (Finnish) Grandmother (Ina Knuutila Harper)
played
violin in the 1930 orchestra .. I play that exact same
instrument now as a
beginning folk fiddler. My mother (Roberta) played flute in the 1955
orchestra. My grandfather ("Moe" Harper) headed up the
local Musicians Union in the 1960's .. he played
Jazz clarinet and saxophone around town. - Mike
Some local and imported tunes from Ben
Smith ...
I just wanted to let everyone know about my endeavor to share fiddle
tunes on the web! I know there are many sites that already have large
collections of tunes available for free (tunedb.com for example) but
there is no harm adding more.
My tunes are at www.benjamindaysmith.com
and then click on "Tunes" near the top of the page.
There are several dozen tunes that are commonly played in this area in
addition to a bunch I learned in Ireland. Also I have made
transcriptions of the playing of the fine Ct. Clare Fiddler Tola Custy
and the legendary Sean McGuire. I am adding more all the time (a few
every week).
And unlike other sites all my tunes are in PDF format so any one can
download them and make high quality prints immediately!
I hope these are of some use - feel free to contact me with suggestions
or comments.
peace,
Ben Smith

G-Force: visualize your
music ....
G-Force is a music
visualization plug-in for media players and can also visualize auxiliary or
"line-in" audio. G-Force features fast anti-aliased effects, millions
of possible visual combinations, savable and scriptable effects, and
unparalleled expandability. G-Force is designed to entertain you on its
own, but there are many ways it can be customized and extended. G-Force
has been described as “mind-blowing” and “legendary” in the press and
by its many fans.
G-Force is the most dynamic and sophisticated, yet entirely artistic, music
visualization available—and it keeps getting better. This is a direct
result of creator Andy O'Meara's strong roots in mathematics and
computing theory combined with a passion for music and visual art. If
you've seen G-Force in action, you know this isn't an exaggeration–see
the screenshots for yourself! Andy is continuing to work hard to change
the nature of music visualization–ultra-dynamic, yet highly artistic,
music visualization is uncharted territory.

Email to Mike: "In 1987 I was a classical guitar student
at Kent State University. My friend Carol asked me if I wanted to
go to a Folk
Festival. I said, “Yeah sure, What's a Folk
Festival?”
We showed up, and two of the
acts were John McCutcheon and
the Horse Flies.
After a weekend of
taking workshops and incredible concerts, I was absolutely hooked on
this folk music. I sold my classical and electric guitars and
bought a steel string, and started writing songs, learning traditional
tunes and going to every concert I could find. It was the
beginning of my path in life. Going to Trumansburg tonight to
hear the Horse Flies play
again [Jan 10, 2005] was a big treat. Memory
lane of sorts. This town is damn cool. Thanks for sending
out your newsletters, they're serving as a great way
to get to know this town. See you soon. Joe Crookston"

knit community of people encouraging and supporting the presentation of
folk and acoustic music in this region."
The Friends of Folk Music in Central New York
(FOF-CNY) is an
unmoderated listserv-based

folk music -- both traditional and contemporary. The listserve itself
was
set up to aid in discussions pertaining to the promotion

Strad's
Secrets Revealed?
From STRINGS magazine:
The ancient mystery of the rich resonance heard in Stradivari
violins may have been solved. The secret? An extended period of long
winters and cool summers—known as the "Little Ice Age"—led to extremely
dense wood with special acoustic properties, according to a pair of
scientists.

The
Back Porch News
News Letter
and Website
The Back Porch news was created to provide timely, and
we hope interesting news for the folk music community.
It is the creation of Ken McKinney a long time folk
music fan and board member of the Cornell
Folk Song Society in Ithaca NY.
If you have news to share we’d be delighted to hear
from you. Use the contact
form to get in touch.
We
attempt to present news, happy or sad which is of interest to the whole
folk music community, new venu openings closings, anniversaries,
awards, births, deaths, publications and so on. Clarity and brevity are
appreciated. The less it sounds like it came from a corporate marcom
department the better.
This is not the place to publicize your
venue or gig schedule. Our audience is too wide spread geographically
for it to be useful to many of them. There are already lots of channels
to get that information out in any case.

"The fiddle is
an instrument to tickle human ears by friction of a horse's tail on the
entrails of a cat."

Irish and Scottish) which can be written on one stave in standard
classical notation. However, it is extendible to many other types of
music.

Hetzler's
Fakebook of traditional fiddle music. An online
collection of 366 tunes in MIDI format plus selected sheet
music. "Old Time" tunes are
listed alphabetically by key. Celtic tunes are listed by type (i.e.,
reels, strathspeys, jigs, etc.). Sheet music is listed alphabetically.
This site recommended by Laura: "I love this link.
The number of tunes in GIF/PDF and!!! MIDI is incredible. It is
terrific to be able to hear some of these songs,
particularly some of those we've never played. Wish they had chords,
but aw heck, I guess I'll have to learn to figure
them out on my own... Pretty cool to hear how “boys” and “boatin’ sound
here! (check out the “sheet music” link)
I'm sending a donation!" --Laura
The Cornell Folk Song Club was founded in
the late 1950s to encourage
and preserve traditional and traditionally-oriented folk music through
