Dear All

I walked Yellow One with John Dempsey of the DEC yesterday. We identified 18 shallow waterbars that needed cleaning out, and/or installation, and all the areas that will require fabric and gravel, as well as a couple places that almost defy the imagination for how to best repair them without heavy equipment to assist, but we are "working on that." Plus one spot where we will place a 12 " pipe and fill in over it as it is a deep cut that is tough on skis in the winter, and jars the teeth of mountain bikers in the summer.

EMS Store 129 is putting on a trail work day on Hammond Hill on June 13th, to do some light trail work, probably addressing some of those waterbars I mentioned, and slashing back the briars that love to tear us up on a summer hike. Also clearing up some other trails that need attention, too. All depends on how big a turnout we get. Meeting place is my cabin (the Hammond Hill -Ton) opposite the municipal parking lot. We will meet there for snacks and "duty assignments." You need to bring your favorite tools: shovels, hoes, picks, pruning equipment, etc.  EMS will be posting info around town and at their store, so you can look there for more details.

Sadly, we will not have any DEC earth moving equipment available to us for August 21. All their equipment is being sent elsewhere for a major trail renovation. The DEC will let us know whether we can use personal tractors and so on to carry in gravel and other materials. Also whether they have the funds to help with some trail materials. They will be getting back to me with estimates on how much materials we will need to do Yellow One up to the T intersection, so I can start getting a handle on how much money we need to raise for materials.

Finally, I will be away from my computer for a number of weeks starting Friday the 16th. My son Shawn will be around. He will monitor emails for me and let me know if there is anything catastrophic I need him to respond to in my stead. However, I won't be able to get back to anyone with regular on-going ideas until I get back. Just so you know why I don't respond to your emails in the usual PDQ fashion. I will eventually respond, though, I promise!

Until we visit again, keep those great ideas coming... our block party is really taking shape. The FLLT is planning a nature hike with Mike DeMunn, several folks at the Lab of Ornithology are planning a mist netting demonstration, and Marie McRae will run a mini clinic (on my property) on how to approach horses on the trails (and related details.) There will be a Bike-O headed up by John Kilmer, and the History-O will be getting look-alike historical markers painted by the Pendell family. Our Music department keeps expanding, plus Jillian the Brave is going to coordinate the dish to pass along with Susan Rausch's barbeque.

Thanks, everyone, for your help!!!
Ann Leonard
